March 18, 2009 [Santa Barbara Independent]: “Carol Lapham Valentine, a patron of the arts and horticulture and a civic leader, died March 16th in Montecito. She was 98. During her 45 years as a resident of the Santa Barbara area Carol Valentine served as chairman of the board of trustees of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art from 1972 to 1976, as chairman of the Montecito Water District board of directors from 1976 to 1991, and as founding trustee and chairman of the Ganna Walska Lotusland Foundation from 1984 to 2000. She was born June 11, 1910, in Pelham Manor, New York, the daughter of Roger Dearborn Lapham and Helen Abbot Lapham. She attended Smith College. She was the widow of the late Ernst C. Ophuls and the late Edward R. Valentine. She is survived by her son, Patrick Ophuls, her daughter, Maria Ophuls Grant, four grandchildren, Nicholas Ophuls, Hardy Ophuls, Gillian Grant and Elena Cahir, and three great grandchildren, Harriet, Auden, and Cyrus Ophuls. There will be no funeral services. Gifts in memory of Carol Valentine may be made to the Ganna Walska Lotusland Foundation, 695 Ashley Rd., Santa Barbara, CA 93108.”
