WILKINSON, Captain

WILKINSON, Frederick Douglas (1829-1874), sea captain born in England who lived in New York with his parents in the 1850s. He married Elizabeth Hawkins (1835-1907) in 1845, and they had four children:

  • Frederick Douglas Wilkinson, Jr. (c. 1858- )
  • William C. Wilkinson (1864-1926) = Estella May Clark (1879-1951)
  • Elizabeth B. Wilkinson (1862- )
  • Frank C. Wilkinson ( - )

After 1860 the Captain lived in Eureka, CA and sailed out of the port of San Francisco. He was captain of the lumber schooner, Hesperia, when he was lost at sea on November 6, 1874.

November 7, 1874 [SBMP]: “A correspondent at Wilmington sends the following this morning: Night before last as the brig Hesperian was off Santa Rosa Island, while jibing the mainsail, the main book struck and knocked Captain Wilkinson overboard. The vessel hove to, and boats were lowered, but all efforts to rescue the captain were unavailing. Captain Wilkinson has been running to this port for a long time, and was well known and greatly respected. His family were on board at the time of the casualty. His son is now in charge of the vessel.”


November 9, 1874 [SDU]: “Captain Wilkinson drowned. November 9, 1874 [SBMP]: “One Hundred Dollars Reward. The following telegram was received at the Sheriff's office on Saturday last: Wilmington, Los Angeles Co., November 7, 1874. To the Sheriff of Santa Barbara County: One hundred reward will be paid to any person or persons who can give any tidings of Captain Wilkinson who was lost from the brig Hesperian on the night of November 5th on the south side of Santa Rosa Island. Signed, Mrs. Wilkinson.”
