ARNOLD, Lee Weight (1914-1956)[SS#548-16-4404], San Diego-born naturalist who worked at the San Diego Museum Natural History Museum in the 1930s as a young man. April 13-May 7, 1938, Arnold, accompanied by museum colleagues Norman Bilderback, J. Elton Green and Lewis Walker, participated in a Channel Islands expedition aboard Novia del Mar, owned by Robert P. Scripps. They visited Santa Catalina, Santa Barbara, San Nicolas, San Miguel and Santa Cruz islands. On April 18, 1938 on Santa Catalina Island they collected an immature bald eagle. On July 17, 1939 in Arizona, Arnold collected the type specimen of the Tucson Banded Gecko.

In 1940 Arnold married his botanist wife, Elizabeth (1917-2000), whom he had met at the University of Arizona. During World War II, Arnold was stationed at the Aleutian Islands. After returning, he worked for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and later became a biologist and wildlife refuge manager for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In 1953, due to a war-related condition, Arnold was hospitalized. He died in 1956 at the young age of 41, and was survived by his wife and four children: James R., Laurie, John C. and Elizabeth Anne. Field notes from his trip are at the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology.

In the News~

May 8, 1938 [SanDU]: “Channel Islands expedition finds rare specimens… Three members of the scientific party who returned here yesterday from an exploration trip in the Channel Islands: Lee Arnold, Lewis Walker with an immature bald eagle from Catalina Island, and J. Elton Green. The party reported heavy winds and seas on most of the trip…”

1958 [J. Wildlife Management]: “Lee W. Arnold, a life member of The Wildlife Society, passed away at a Veteran's Administration hospital in Los Angeles on February 12, 1956. He had been a patient for a service-connected disability for about three years. That Lee Arnold's professional career should have been one closely associated with wildlife was ordained by the environment in which his early years were spent. Born in San Diego, California, on October 19, 1914, Lee lived in the immediate vicinity of the local zoological park and museum, and some of his early jobs were at these institutions. His subsequent ability as an outdoorsman, no doubt, had its foundation in the training received in acquiring the status of an Eagle Scout and leader of a Boy Scout troop. On family property in the foothills near Ramona in eastern San Diego County, Lee Arnold spent many week ends and vacations, and it was here where he first trapped animals and learned the rudiments of taxidermy...”
