BECKWITH, Florence

BECKWITH, Florence (1843-1929) school teacher, botanist and charter member of the Botany Section of the Rochester Academy of Science in New York. She was editor of Vicks Magazine, published by the James Vick Seed Company, and she served as Chairman of the Botany Section of the Rochester Academy of Science from 1897 until her death in 1929 at age 85. During most of that time she also served as an Academy Councilor.

Florence Beckwith never married. She is buried in a family plot in Oatka Cemetery, Scottsville, New York.


Millspaugh and Nuttall (1923) report: “Of the University of Rochester, N. Y., [Florence Beckwith] spent a few hours on June 5, 1915 ‘along the beach near Avalon.’ She secured about a dozen species.” The principal set is in the herbarium of Rochester Academy of Sciences, New York, where Beckwith was a staff botanist. Duplicates are in the herbarium of the Field Museum, Chicago.
