BRANDT, Herbert William

BRANDT, Herbert William (1884-1955), ornithologist born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 28, 1884. In 1907 Brandt received his degree as a Mining Engineer from Case Institute of Technology, followed by a Master's degree. His interest in ornithology led him to a field in which he could work out of doors. Brandt worked in Nevada and New Mexico. He returned to Cleveland to run the family business, The Brandt Company, a wholesale provisions business, when his father died. Wealthy, he was able to lead 42 expeditions around the world, including four to the Arctic.

Brandt was a life member of the American Ornithologists Union. He became a member of the Cooper Ornithological Club in 1914. He published several birding books for Texas, Alaska and Arizona. The University of Alaska awarded him an honorary Ph.D for his work on Alaskan birds.

Brandt died suddenly on March 8, 1955 while in the field in Homestead, Florida.
