Badlands are regions nearly devoid of vegetation where erosion has cut the land into intricate mazes of narrow ravines and sharp crests and pinnacles. Areas of badlands occur on most of the California Channel Islands. Within Channel Islands National Park, badlands are best represented on the southeastern quarter of Santa Rosa Island.
