CANTERBURY, Robert Harold (1902-1979)[SS#556-18-8444], California-born amateur ornithologist, botanist, horticulturist and employee of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden who collected specimens for the herbarium. Before he had graduated from high school, Canterbury was collecting egg sets on Santa Cruz Island for renowned ornithologist, William Leon Dawson.

Canterbury made collecting trips to Santa Cruz Island March 18-April 23, 1919 and March 29-April 13, 1922, and to Anacapa Island on March 18, 1922. He collected two egg sets on Santa Cruz Island on March 20 and 27, 1919 now in the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The Nature Club of Southern California, led by Ralph Hoffmann, took a field trip to Santa Cruz Island the weekend of September 1-3, 1928. As reported in the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Leaflet October 1928, during this trip, Canterbury, then gardener at the Blaksley Garden, “armed with shovel and gunny sacks, scoured the canyons and chaparral slopes for roots and seeds to add to the Island Group in the Garden.” He was helped by Theodore Payne who was “filling paper bags with seeds of Eriogonum arborescens, a shrub particular to the islands.” Canterbury also had an interest in wildlife, and had accompanied ornithologist William Leon Dawson on an expedition to Mexico.

Canterbury was born in Riverside on October 2, 1902, attended Santa Barbara High School (class of 1922), and died in Santa Barbara in May of 1979 at 76 years of age. Copies of his field notes can be found in the library holdings of the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology in Camarillo, California.
