CARRILLO, José Antonio Ezequiel (1796-1862) and older brother, Carlos Antonio de Jesus Carrillo (1784-1852), were granted Santa Rosa Island by Governor Micheltorena on October 3, 1843. They were sons of José Raymundo Carrillo who arrived in Alta California from Loreto, BCS, Mexico as a soldier with Father Junipero Serra’s expedition in 1769. On November 2, 1843, a month after the Carrillo brothers received Santa Rosa Island, they assigned their rights to two of ten children born to Carlos Antonio Carrillo and his wife, Josefa Raymunda Castro (1792-1853): daughters, Maria Francisca (1816-1851) and Manuela Antonia (1820-1900).

These sisters were married to two Americans, Alpheus Basil Thompson (1797-1869) and John Coffin Jones (1796-1861), who entered into a partnership to occupy and operate the island. They paid José and Carlos Carrillo $3300, “one half in silver money of good quality and the other half in goods.”

On March 23, 1852 Manuela Carrillo de Jones filed her claim to Santa Rosa Island. Her claim was confirmed in 1856. A third daughter also had an interest in a California Channel Island. Maria de la Encarnación Carrillo (1814-1876) married American Thomas M. Robbins (1801-1854) on February 3, 1834. Robbins owned Santa Catalina Island from 1846-1850. Uncle José Carrillo served as mayor of Santa Barbara in 1855 to replace deceased Pablo de la Guerra.
