'''July 6, 1927 [TI/Avalon]:''' “Charles M. Collins, aged 45, an engineer, fell down the freight elevator shaft at a local hotel Sunday evening [July 4] and received injuries which caused his death. Collins had finished his work for the day and apparently was going to the roof of the hotel to watch the fireworks display on the waterfront. A witness stated that Collins lifted the gate of the elevator shaft and in doing so overbalanced, and fell head first into the shaft. A few moments later Mr. Collins was carried to the Catalina Hospital and without regaining consciousness passed away. City fireman C. E. Sullivan who was the first to rush to the engineer’s assistance, stated that Mr. Collins was unconscious when he reached him. The County Coroner was immediately notified, and the inquest was announced for Tuesday afternoon. The deceased is survived by a mother, who resides at Colombus, Ohio, and by a brother, W. Collins of Taft, California. Mr. Collins had been in the employ of the Santa Catalina Island Company for several years, was a faithful and industrious employee, and had many friends in Avalon. The news of his death was keenly felt by his fellow workmen.”

Collins, 50, formerly and for several years a resident of Taft, who died on Sunday from injuries received when he fell through an elevator shaft at Avalon, Catalina Island. Rev. Father J. L. Daumas of St. Francis Catholic Church officiated. Interment was in Union Cemetery. Collins was well known on the West Side, where he made his home for seven years, until 1929.”
