June 30, 1926 [TI/Avalon]: “As a result of injuries received from the premature explosion of a cannon on board the replica ship Constitution, at the Isthmus, C. G. Davis, a motion picture actor residing at 1014 South San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, passed away while en route from the Isthmus to Avalon in a speed boat Sunday evening. The explosion also injured George Boyle, A. Olson, Eric Johansen, Charles Carlson and G. Louit, all residents of Los Angeles. The five men are now in the Catalina Hospital under the care of Dr. W. J. Harrison and Dr. Simmons. The body of Mr. Davis was taken to Wilmington and the Coroner’s inquest was to have been held Tuesday afternoon. According to the report which reached Avalon the premature discharge of the old-fashioned cannon displaced two masts of the replica vessel, and the men who were on the mast at the time fell to the deck. The accident happened in the midst of a battle scene some fifteen miles off Ship Rock. The film producers immediately stopped their work and a speed boat was dispatched from Avalon, carrying the medical supplies and a physician.”
