July 14, 1874 [SBMP]: “Perils of Seal Hunting. The Ventura "Signal", of the 11th inst., records the following fatal result from an attempt to capture a seal on one of our outlying islands: Capt. Bram, of a seal schooner which has been plying between this port and the islands, was drowned while attempting to shoot a seal on the low rocks. It seems he had crawled down too low on the rocks to be out of reach of the heavy swells which frequently break in on the ragged shores of the island, and was washed out and dashed against the rocks and killed instantly.”
