March 2006: The Harbor Mistress informed us that her husband died scuba diving the Valiant in Descanso Bay six years previously. Yikes, that was weird. She said that he was a dive instructor, tested gear for Rodale’s and used to dive alone for lobster every night. They did not have a clue why he drowned.

Capt. John Kades at the L.A. County Department of Coroner has done an excellent job of compiling fatality stats for L.A. County diving going back to 1994.

I am the Forensic Consultant for the LA Corner and I have only very sketchy info at this point (12 hours or so after the accident). How about if we pledge to stop speculating? If you have some direct first-hand information, I'd be happy to hear it. (Please contact me directly at 310/652-4990.)

Twenty people have died in eight plane crashes coming in or out of Airport in the Sky in the last decade, including the three Feb. 5., 2009. Before that wreck, the most recent crash happened a little more than three months ago, when three people were killed in a crash off the end of the runway.

2012 July 1 Plane crash killed pilot. 20-acre blaze. (see July 9, 2010)

2002 Two were killed when a plane crashed at the Airport-in-the-Sky when the pilor overshot the runway and caused a ¼ acre brush fire.
