1542 Juan R. Cabrillo, explorer, died of an infection from a broken limb, reportedly on this island.


19th CENTURY DEATHS

1890 January 12 [LAT]: “A Spanish man employed on the schooner Santa Cruz was lost overboard while the vessel was near San Miguel Island on the 8th inst.”

1890 unidentified body washed ashore and washed to sea again before it was recovered.

1891 Augustine Ybarra, an Indian, was swept overboard off the sloop Liberty on June 14.

1891 Pablo Valencia (68), drowned at the west end while sealing on July 6.

1891 Joe Pasquale presumably drowned on July 19.

1891 Juan Bautista Pico (40), drowned at the west end while sealing on July 6.

1891 Johnny Amos, a “Negro boy” drowned at the west end while sealing on July 6.

1923 David G. Guevarra died of a heart attack February 17 while working on the island and was buried there.

1932 Ralph Hoffmann (61), Santa Barbara Museum director, fell from a cliff while collecting plants on July 21.

1935 Robert Glenn Strong (31), cameraman accidentally drowned while filming Mutiny on the Bounty.

2014 Richard Martin Smith (63), identified as the badly decomposed body found at Simonton Cove August 5.
