April 1, 1940 [Valley Morning Star, Harlingen, TX]: “Truck driver drowns. Los Angeles — Victor Joseph Desbians, 35, an AFL union truck driver who was found drowned at Catalina Island Saturday, left two notes. One read: 'I am tired of life and have decided to take a permanent bath.'”


April 2, 1940 [San Bernardino County Sun]: “Suicide leaves $100 to Dies' committee. Los Angeles, April 1. Victor Joseph Desbians, 35, an A.F.L. union truck driver found drowned at Catalina Island Saturday, left two notes. One read: 'I am tired of life and have decided to take a permanent bath.' The other, accompanied by a $100 check and addressed to 'Mr. Dies of the Dies Comity of the un-American activities,' said in part: 'I wish you would accept this check as a gift to said comity to help carry on the fine work for the benefit of our flag and nations, country and our democracy.'”
