Dry Lake Airfield, San Miguel Island, 2020

Dry Lake Airfield, San Miguel Island was surveyed in 1934 by the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey team with Herbert Lester, self-proclaimed deputy sheriff of San Miguel Island. The airstrip runs 30 degrees west of north, and is 1476 feet in length by 524 feet in width. Lester’s notes indicate:

“Extreme precaution must be made if making a landing on Dry Lake as the surface is likely to be slippery for long periods after rains and it will be difficult to obtain traction to take off.”
