Goode ran both the fish research program of the U.S. Fish Commission and the Smithsonian Institution from 1873 to 1887, and served as the United States Commissioner for Fish and Fisheries from 1887 to 1888.These are the first two volumes of what would eventually be a seven volume study of the fisheries of America. Titled 'Section 1: Natural History of Useful Aquatic Animals', the first volume contains a discussion of the habits, biology and movements of these animals, and the second volume consists of 277 accompanying plates.Illustrated with 277 illustrations of aquatic animals, and a small number of folding maps and charts.
