FOSBERG, Francis Raymond (1908-1993), Washington-born botanist who collected plants on Santa Cruz Island during the late 1920s. It was said Fosberg probably visited more Pacific islands, always for detailed study, than any other man in the twentieth century. By the time of his death at age 85, he had published over 600 books and articles, and made over 56,000 collections of herbarium material. He was one of the few who collected specimens on Bird Rock off Santa Catalina Island. His advice was sought by such luminaries as James Michener, Rachel Carson and Marlon Brando. He helped found The Nature Conservancy.
