Farnsworth Loop, Santa Catalina Island

Farnsworth Loop, Santa Catalina Island, named for Samuel Stephen Farnsworth (1854-1933), father of the infamous Avalon fisherman, “Tuna George.” In 1900, the senior Farnsworth went to work on Santa Catalina Island surveying the road from Avalon to the Isthmus and moved the family to Avalon. His ingenious Farnsworth Loop allowed stage coaches traveling the road to the island's isthmus to make a particular turn with safety.
