Abilene Cemetery, Abilene, Kansas

GILES, Frank B. (1891-1908), son of William Butterfield Giles (1849-1918) and Lucinda Junken Giles (1854-1930), drowned while swimming in the ocean at Santa Catalina Island on August 17, 1908. He is buried in Abilene Cemetery, Abilene, Kansas.

August 18, 1908 [SFCall]: “Drowned in shallow water. Avalon, Catalina Island, Cal. Aug. 17. — F. B. Giles, aged 18, of Abilene, Kan., was this afternoon found drowned in less than five feet of water. He had been bathing when he suddenly sank to the bottom. The body was recovered. Although heroic measures were taken to resuscitate him, they failed.”

August 19, 1908 [Abilene Daily Reflector]: “A telegram received by the family this morning from Miss Ethel Giles says that with the body of her brother Frank, who was drowned off Catalina Island Monday afternoon she had arrived at Los Angeles and will start for home tonight. The arrival here will probably be Sunday. Funeral arrangements will be announced when more definite information of the time of reaching here is definitely known.”
