September 6, 1939 [Arizona Independent Republic]: “Lost at sea. Jack Griffith, 19-year-old Phoenix youth, was believed drowned off Catalina Island, Calif., Saturday night when he disappeared from a fishing vessel, according to information received here yesterday. W. B. Griffith, 4133 North Longview Ave., brother of the youth. said a letter from a sister, Mrs. James L. Giffin, Long Beach, Calif., indicated the search of Coast Guard boats and the boat from which he disappeared had been futile. The fishing boat's skipper said the youth had gone to the stern to prepare bait and apparently was lost overboard just before the boat anchored three miles from the island. Griffith had been employed a year on the fishing vessel. Graduate of a local grammar school, the youth went to California five years ago. Memorial services are being planned, his brother here announced. In addition to the sister in Long Beach and his brother here, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. E. Meyers, and another sister, Mrs. F. L. Mercer, both of Los Angeles.”
