December 28, 1916 [SBDNI]: “Long Beach. Six men, including William Berke, holder of the world’s deep sea diving record, are all safe today following the wrecking of their 65-foot launch Gray on the rocks of Catalina Island. The loss is $22,500, covered by insurance. The six men, Berke, John T. Wells, Fred Wells, Captain John Gray, Stanley Wright and Harvey Mercereau, all connected with the Oregon Wrecking, Salvage and Marine Construction Company of Portland and Seattle, were forced to swim ashore when the boat went on the rocks.”
