July 2, 1954 [San Bernardino County Sun]: “Skin diver, 15, dies. Avalon — Timothy Lee Haight, 15, of Los Angeles, drowned in Avalon Bay off Catalina Island Thursday when his skin diving equipment became entangled in kelp.”


July 2, 1954 [Wilmington Daily Press Journal]: “Second skin diver drowns at Catalina. The second young skin diver to drown at Catalina Island in a week perished yesterday when he became entangled in kelp a few yards from shore. Another diver recovered the body of Timothy Lee Haight, 15, of 3462 Carmona Vvenue, Long Breach, and worked for nearly four hours in an unsuccessful effort to revive him. The youth was diving near the St. Catherine Hotel with a party of five others. Donald E. Evers, 25, of Alhambra, who brought the body to the surface, said he had to cut young Haight's aqualung from the kelp. The body of Jack Nichols, 18, of Los Angeles, who vanished last Sunday was recovered yesterday near Goat Harbor.”
