January 24, 1935 [TI/Avalon]: “Buried under tons of rock and dirt loosened by recent rains, Homer Harrington, 46-year-old laborer, was killed last Thursday night [January 17] in a Santa Catalina Island rock pit. A dozen other workmen clambered to safety as the slide started, but Harrington, apparently unable to hear their shouts of warning, had no opportunity to escape. The body was recovered after several hours of digging. Harrington resided at 4462 Cherokee Street in San Diego, The Sunday before the disaster occurred, Mr. Harrington was an attendant upon the morning services at the local Community Congregational Church.”
