HASSE, Hermann Edward(1836-1915), German-born botanist particularly interested in fungi and lichens. He was the only child of Edward and Rosalie [Thiele] Hasse, born in Freiburg, Saxony, Germany on January 12, 1836. The family moved to America in 1845 (Wisconsin then Missouri) when Hasse was 9. He attended college in St. Louis, and then received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Wurtzburg. Hasse served as a surgeon during the Civil War, and after the war he practiced medicine in Wisconsin, Arkansas and Missouri before moving to Los Angeles, California in 1879.

He married Adelaide Trentlage of Milwaukee, and they had five children:

• Andrae Elsbeth “Elsa” (1873-1950)
• Hilda (1876-1962)
• Carl Edward (1878-1944)
• Jessie Louise (1881-1921)

Over a 35-year-period, Hasse collected lichens primarily in Southern California. In 1913 he published Lichen Flora of southern California.
