HAYES, Edward William (1920-1992)[#571-40-2296], born in Arizona, he died in a diving accident on June 6, 1992. Hayes was 71 years old.

June 7, 1992 [LAT]: “Abalone diver found drowned. A 71-year-old abalone diver drowned in Catalina Harbor Saturday, authorities said. The man, who was not identified pending notification of relatives, failed to swim to the surface at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Sheriff's Deputy Diane Hecht said. She said the two men had been diving for abalone. The man's partner found his friend on the ocean floor and pulled him to the surface, but the other man had already died.”


June 9, 1992 [LAT]: “Authorities Monday identified a scuba diver whose body was found off Santa Catalina Island over the weekend. Edward Hayes, 71, of Glendora and a 40-year-old unidentified companion entered Catalina Harbor between 3:45 and 4 p.m. Saturday, then split up to search for abalone, said Deputy Irma Becerra of the Sheriff's Information Bureau. The younger diver came back to the boat later and waited for Hayes, and then notified the Coast Guard.”
