March 30, 1911 [WP]: “Los Angeles. F. M. Heil, a second-class fireman on the destroyer Stewart, was accidentally shot and killed today [March 29] during a target practice at Beechers Bay, Santa Rosa Island. Heil stepped in front of a .30 caliber rifle, just as the gunner pulled the trigger. The bullet struck Heil in the forehead. Heil was 24 years old, and had been in the service seven years. His father lives in Dallas, Texas.”
