INGERSOLL, Albert M.
INGERSOLL, Albert “Bert” Mills (1857-1954) was born at Ithaca New York on August 9, 1857 to Jared Otis Mills Ingersoll (1823-1859) and Caroline E. Whiton Ingersoll (1830-1887), the youngest of three children. His father died when he was but a year old. As a child Ingersoll was fascinated by the outdoors and natural history. He began collecting eggs and rearing wildlife in his youth. In the 1880s he moved to California, living in East Oakland before moving to San Diego. Ingersoll collected in twenty-four counties of the state during his lifetime. A condor egg was in his collection.

In the News~
January 15, 1910 [The Oologist 27(1) No. 270]: “While in California we had the pleasure of meeting A. M. Ingersoll, a well known bird student of San Diego, who with his wife was stopping at one of the leading Los Angeles hotels for the winter. Mr. Ingersoll is the second person with whom the editor of this publication ever arranged an exchange of eggs. Until this meeting in California, we had never seen Mr. Ingersoll, though had kept up a correspondence acquaintance with him for many years. It is a pleasure now to know that he is not only one of the leading oologists of the coast, and that he has perhaps the most complete collection of North American eggs existing on the coast, but also that he has by strict attention to business and legitimate means, accumulated a competence. He has now retired to enjoy the fruits of his industry and declining years. No doubt he will spend a large portion of his time in his favorite pursuit, the study of birds.”
March 3, 1925 Joseph Grinnell field notes: “...I am quite favorably impressed with the earnestness
and general good judgement of Clinton G. Abbott, Director of the [San Diego] Museum here. He seems to have the confidence of many of the foremost business-men of the city. This noon he took me to the
University Club to lunch, with Mr. Joseph W. Sefton, Jr., a banker. The latter is now President of the
San Diego Society of Natural History and a good patron. Sunday evening I called on Mr. and Mrs. Albert M.
Ingersoll and they invited over Mr. and Mrs. John Burnham. Ingersolls have a wonderful, well cared-for collection of birds' eggs, nearly all taken by himself during the past 40 years. And Burnham, a man of 58 or so and successful in real estate, emulates him. The latter, too, is treasurer of the San Diego society of Natural History. Burnham has a son, Gordon, in business with him, when I met. He has been into the San Pedro Martir section of Lower California, and through him and several others I have learned much of possible use as to how to get about among the people of that territory. This information I am writing to Lamb...”
