November 2, 1950 [San Bernardino County Sun]: “Avalon, Cal., Nov. 1 — Defective diving equipment was blamed today for the death of abalone diver Robert Johnson, 24, in the sea off the Santa Barbara islands. Johnson was pronounced dead on arrival at Avalon pier last night. Catalina Island sheriff's deputies said he apparently drowned or suffocated in 40 feet of water when his air equipment failed yesterday.”
