Balmy weather attracted nearly 500,000 people to Southland beaches Sunday to enjoy temperatures averaging in the high 70s and water almost as warm in some spots. Two accidents marred the otherwise enjoyable day. At Avalon, sheriff's deputies reported a Whittier man missing and presumed drowned. At Hamilton beach on Catalina Island, a day-long search failed to locate the body of Jesse L. Jones, 41, of Whittier. Jones had been scuba diving with his wife, Connie, 40, and William R. King, 24, of Huntington Beach. They had trouble with the anchor of King's boat and King and Jones went into the water to check. Jones failed to surface.”
