December 5, 1965 [Independent Press-Telegram]: “Visiting dentist dies in skin diving mishap. An Atherton, Calif. dentist died off Santa Barbara Island Saturday while skin diving. The Coast Guard identified the dead man as 51-year-old Dr. August J. Kaferata. Kaferata was dead on arrival at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance at 11 a.m. after being airlifted from the deck of a charter boat. Hospital attendants said an autopsy would be conducted to determint the exact cause of death. Dr. Kaferata, the father of 3, was one of the 17 passengers aboard the Holly B, a Norm's Landing Charter vessel from San Pedro. Harlan E. Bowles, 59, owner-operator of the Holly B, said Kaferata and a friend were diving in 30 feet of water off the east coast of the island about 10 a.m. when the dentist disappeared. A few minutes later, Kaferata surfaced, after apparently dropping his weight belt. He was pulled aboard the boat, where attempts were made to revive him while a Coast Guard helicopter was summoned. The copter made a pickup and rushed Kaferata to the hospital.”
