June 3, 1984 [Around the Nation]: “4 in marine helicopter killed in coast crash. A Marine Corps helicopter participating in a training exercise off the coast of San Clemente Island crashed into the Pacific Friday, and all four people aboard were killed. The dead were Capt. Barry Michael Thompson, 28 years old, First Lieut. Thomas Otto Schaefer, 25, Lance Cpl. James Merlyn Kloss, 24, and Cpl. John J. Utsinger, 21. The aircraft crashed into about 1,700 feet of water, about 11 miles southwest of the island, as the pilot attempted to lift and transport a five-ton truck, Sergeant Odermann said.”
June 21, 1984 [Tustin News]: “Services were June 15 for U.S. Marine Cpl. James M. Kloss of Tustin, who died June 1 in a helicopter accident. He was 23. Born in Minnesota on Aug. 14, 1960, he was a member of the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465. He was killed when a Sea Stallion helicopter lifting a truck from the deck of the U.S.S. Denver crashed near San Clemente Island. Three other Marines were killed in the mishap that occurred during a Marine amphibious exercise.”
