September 11, 1917 [SBMP]: “Reported drownings at Santa Cruz Island... Caught in heavy seas of the channel Friday morning, the launch Kranstadt, owned by James Kudenhoff of Long Beach, was wrecked, and Kudenhoff and the three members of his crew were drowned. The wreck happened at Santa Cruz Island. The tender Imperial found the wreckage and the nets. The boat was 45 feet long and cost about $5000. The boat was being used by the fishermen for supplying the Halfhill Tuna Canning Company of Long Beach.”
