February 5, 1958 [LAT]: “Some 40 airplanes and five Coast Guard vessels will resume the search today for the missing B-47 Stratojet atom bomber believed down in the ocean near San Miguel Island with three aboard. The search by Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard planes for the bomber, missing since Wednesday, was hampered yesterday by rough seas and high winds during the day. Thursday's hope that an oil slick 55 miles west of San Miguel Island might be a clue to the plane's disappearance dissolved after investigation by a crash boat showed the slick did not appear to be from the wreckage. The B-47 had taken off from March Air Force Base Wednesday and was last heard from at 5:56 p.m. when it radioed it was over Santa Barbara heading seaward to practice bombing.”
