December 7, 1970 [LBI]: “Costa Mesa man drowns during dive. A 41-year-old Costa Mesa man drowned Sunday afternoon after he apparently became entangled in kelp while scuba diving near Catalina Island, sheriff's deputies reported. Robert Arthur Lockwood, of 2700 Peterson Way, was pronounced dead at the scene after county lifeguards recovered his body near Empire Landing on the island's east end, deputies said. Witnesses said Lockwood was diving with a party from the 28-foot cabin cruiser Cruising Club, and had been submerged long enough to consume most of his air supply when he apparently became entangled in the kelp bed.”
