October 27, 1958 [LBI]: “Body of skindiver found at Catalina. The body of 22-year-old Culver City skindiver, who disappeared Thursday while swimming alone off Catalina Island, was recovered Sunday by county lifeguards near Eagle Reef. The drowned man was John Theodore Long, a laborer at the MGM film studios. His 16-foot outboard boat was found empty Friday, anchored in Cherry Cove, by a Coast Guard vessel searching for him after he was reported missing. County lifeguards and skindivers searched near his boat Saturday, but found no trace of his body. Deputy sheriffs said Long embarked on a solo diving trip against the advice of his friends. His body was taken to Utier-McKinley Mortuary in Inglewood.”


October 27, 1958 [Redlands Daily Facts]: “Skin diver drowns. Avalon.— County lifeguards Sunday recovered a body identified as that of film technician John Long. They said Long apparently drowned while skin diving in the ocean.”
