November 13, 1960 [LAT]: “Garden Grove youth lost in Avalon Harbor. Companion saves unconscious scoutmaster. A sea scout excursion to Santa Catalina Island ended with the probable drowning of a young skin diver and the rescue of his scoutmaster Saturday afternoon. The youth, Dale Martineau, 18, of Garden Grove, was missing and presumed drowned following a SCIBA-diving exercise in the rain-swept waters off Avalon Harbor. Another scout, Thomas Wall, 17, of Garden Grove, revived scoutmaster Charles Modlin, 39, with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the Coast Guard reported. Martineau was one of 14 scouts from Garden Grove Ship 73 who left Newport Saturday morning for an excursion to Catalina aboard a 40-ft. converted Coast Guard fireboat, Volunteer, skippered by Modlin, of 13381 Lynne Dr., Garden Grove. Charles Baccus, mate of the boat, said Modlin and Martineau went diving in 50 ft. of water soon after the boat arrived at Avalon. Thirty minutes later, Modlin popped to the surface on his back, apparently unconscious. Baccus dove in and pulled him from the water. Modlin, under treatment for shock at Avalon Community Hospital, said he and Martineau were swimming back to the boat underwater when the boy signaled that his air tank was empty. The scoutmaster, who was carrying two tanks, said he lost his weight belt as he tried to give the stricken youth his own air hose, and popped to the surface from a depth of about 30 feet. The Coast Guard searched for Martineau's body until storm warnings were hoisted at nightfall Saturday. The search will resume at sawn today with the aid of a nine-man underwater team of Los Angeles County lifeguards.”
