December 16, 1974 [San Pedro News Pilot]: “ Scuba diver drowns. A scuba diver making his first dive after being certified drowned Sunday near the isthmus at Catalina Island. Investigators reported the victim, 26-year-old Lawrence Mason of Marina del Rey, was making his first dive of the day when he failed to return to the surface. His body was later found floating about a mile west of where he had begun his dive. Because of a number of scuba diving deaths this year along the coast, certification has become mandatory before divers can participate in the sports event alone.”
