Loye Holmes Miller (1874-1970)

MILLER, Loye Holmes (1874-1970), ornithologist and paleontologist who began his teaching career in 1904 at the Los Angeles State Normal School, which later became the University of California at Los Angeles. Miller visited Santa Cruz Island with his son, Alden, and fellow ornithologist A. J. van Rossem in 1922 when they were looking for Mexican crossbills, which they did not find. Miller counseled emerging naturalists ‘to appreciate biotic and geologic events of the past.’ On July 7-18, 1938, Miller visited San Nicolas Island with fellow scientists, T. D. A. Cockerell (biologist and entomologist), and Harvey Allen (geologist and anthropologist). During their visit Mr. and Mrs. Regie Lamberth were living on the island as managers, with their two children, Jeanne (7) and Dennis (5). Mrs. Lamberth’s brothers, Lawrence and Raymond Foster were there as well. Miller wrote an 8-page manuscript about their trip, taking daily notes.
