Scott E. Miller

MILLER, Scott E. (b. ) entomologist specifically interested in the systematics of Lepidoptera (moths). Miller initiated his professional career interests at the California Channel Islands and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in the 1970s and 1980s. He did his undergraduate work at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and received his PhD in biology at Harvard. Miller is #16 of the All 8 Club—a very early member (1995).

Miller spent 12 years at Hawaii's Bishop Museum managing its programs in biology and geology while pursuing interests in the biogeography of the Pacific Basin and New Guinea. He then spent two years in Nairobi, Kenya initiating the biodiversity and conservation program of the International Centre of Insect Ecology and Physiology.

Miller moved to the Smithsonian in 2000, serving as Chairman of the Department of Entomology and Chairman of the Department of Systematic Biology, with oversight of a combined staff over 300 federal employees. He served as Deputy Under Secretary for Science, helping oversee the Smithsonian’s science museums and research facilities, major research initiatives, collections management, exhibitions and educational programs.

Scott Miller is now Deputy Under Secretary for Collections and Interdisciplinary Support, responsible for central planning and development of the Smithsonian’s vast collections (137 million objects) and interdisciplinary support operations, including collections management, conservation and preservation, and related functions. He oversees the National Collections Program, Office of Fellowships and Internships, Office of International Relations, Smithsonian Institution Archives, Smithsonian Institution Libraries and Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press. Miller is also a liaison between the Smithsonian and various cultural and scientific organizations in the United States and around the world.

Miller has collected on all eight California Channel Islands.
