MONROE, Marilyn

MONROE, Marilyn (1926-1962), born Norma Jeane Mortenson, lived on Santa Catalina Island for about 6 months. In 1942 as a teenager, she married her first husband, James Dougherty, who had been a neighbor's son when she attended Van Nuys High School. In 1943, Dougherty enlisted in the Merchant Marine, and was stationed in Avalon during World War II. The young couple lived at Avalon before he was shipped out to the Pacific. Subsequently, Monroe moved in with Dougherty's mother. In September 1946, Monroe filed for divorce, and Dougherty was served with divorce papers while aboard a ship on the Yangtze river in China.
