MORE, Martha Mary “Mattie”

MORE, Martha Mary “Mattie” (1854-1928), eldest daughter of Goleta Valley rancher, T. Wallace More, who married Charles Albert Storke (1847-1936) on September 10, 1873. He was 25; she was 19. They had three children:

  • Martha Augusta Storke (1874-1956)
  • Thomas More Storke (1876-1971)
  • Alice Susanna Storke (1878-1955)


Their marriage ended in divorce and his excommunication from the Catholic Church.

September 5, 1873 [Marriage Licenses, Box 10, 1864-1875, SB County Archives]: “My name is C. A. Storke. I reside in Santa Barbara in the State of California; I desire a license to authorize my marriage with Martha More…”


September 6, 1873 [SBDP]: “Married. The marriage of Professor C. A. Storke, recently connected with Santa Barbara College, and Miss Mattie M. More, eldest daughter of T. Wallace More, Esq., on Friday last, was an event in which the friends of both parties were greatly pleased. We are prepared to congratulate all concerned. Prof. Storke and bride immediately took the steamer Orizaba for Los Angeles, where he goes to establish a daily and weekly newspaper. We wish them abundant prosperity and great happiness.”
