NEAL, Orrin Starr

NEAL, Orrin Starr (1857-1925), born in Illinois, he married Pennsylvania-born Lydia Leila Hales (1859-1942) in Santa Barbara, California on November 6, 1878. Neal was a carpenter who built both boats and homes. He died in Santa Barbara at age 68.

July 26, 1899 [LAT/SB]: “Captain Orin Neal returned from the islands last night with a party of Montecito people. This party has been camping at Santa Cruz Island for a week past.”


September 29, 1925 [SBMP]: “That death was due to heart attack and not to strangulation, was the verdict returned yesterday morning by the coroner’s jury which investigated the death of Orrin S. Neal, 68, pioneer Montecito resident who was found hanging from the rafters in a garage at his home in Carpinteria on Sunday morning. The late Mr. Neal, who had been in poor health for many months, was discovered by his wife shortly after the breakfast hour, but he was beyond human aid when she reached him… Mr. Neal was a native of Illinois and had been a resident of Montecito for the last 50 years. Recently he moved to Carpinteria where he had purchased a home and was living. He is survived by his widow and one brother, A. L. Neal of Montecito…”
