November 14, 1890 [LAT]: “San Pedro, November 13. The Alert a total wreck at the Catalina Isthmus. The tug Alert of San Francisco and a Wilmington Transportation Company lighter went ashore at Catalina Island Wednesday in a heavy northeast wind. Both are total wrecks. The tug was engaged in government work, towing lighters of rock from Catalina for the breakwater at San Pedro. A sailor named William O’Neill of San Francisco was drowned.”
