Overland Monthly

Overland Monthly (first series 1868-1875; second series 1883-1935), a regional monthly magazine founded in San Francisco in 1868. It was edited by Bret Harte until 1871, when several editors took over. The first series collapsed in 1875, but a second series was revived in 1883. Authors including Joaquin Miller, Gertrude Atherton, Jack London, Frank Norris, and George Sterling contributed to its lengthy success. Overland Monthly absorbed Out West in 1823, and itself survived until 1935. Some of the earliest articles about the California Channel Islands appeared in Overland Monthly.
