PEREZ, Juan (d. 1775), commander of the San Antonio in Portola’s 1769 Sacred Expedition. The San Antonio visited Santa Cruz Island and is credited with naming her. It is said that a friar went ashore, and left behind his staff, which had a small iron cross affixed to the top. The next day the Indians went out to the ship in their tomol and returned the staff. Because of this incident the name “Holy Cross” was given to the island. Perez referred to Anacapa Island as Islets of Santo Tomas, later changed by Vancouver in 1792.
