PETERSON, Helmar ( -1925)

Island Collections~

July 1, 1925 [VFP]: “Adrift for almost a month, the lifeless body of Helmar Peterson, seaman and resident of Santa Cruz Island, yesterday was carried into Avalon Bay by the small skiff in which he died. Peterson is believed to have died of thirst and starvation. The man and his boat were missing directly after a storm at sea about June 2. Word was sent along the coast and lookouts sought the fisherman and his missing boat. Neither was seen until the small and derelict craft conveyed the spent remains of its long-dead pilot into the island haven at Avalon. Peterson was last seen alive on June 2 when he visited friends on the side of Santa Cruz Island opposite from where he lived. When he had started home the storm developed.”
