PITELKA, Frank Alois

PITELKA, Frank Alois (1916-2003), Chicago-born ornithologist and ecologist who spent his entire career at the University of California Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, Berkeley, California. He received his Ph.D. at Berkeley in 1946 under Alden H. Miller, and from 1948-1950 was president of the Cooper Ornithological Club. Pitelka served as Curator of Birds at MVZ from 1946-1963. August 28-September 14, 1948, Pitelka visited Santa Cruz Island with O. P. Pearson, looking at birds.
In 1980 he received the American Ornithologists’ Union’s Brewster award, and in 1985 he was made professor emeritus at UC Berkeley. In 1992, he received the Eminent Ecologist award from the Ecological Society of America and an honorary Ph.D. from Masaryk University, former Czechoslovakia. Pitelka died on October 10th, 2003 in Altadena, California.
His field notes are on file at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, Berkeley.
