POWELL, Major John Wesley

POWELL, Major John Wesley (1834-1902), naturalist and Methodist minister who served in the Civil War, losing his right arm at Shiloh. He was director of the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology in 1879, and of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1880-1884. Powell funded Reverend Stephen Bowers $1000 for his work on the Channel Islands. California’s Powell Lake is named for him.
