November 5, 1973 [Long Beach Independent]: “Diver gives companion air, dies. A San Francisco SCUBA diver drowned off Catalina Island Sunday after he gave his air tank to a companion who had run out of air, authorities reported. James Pudoff, 26, of 1859 14thy Ave., was diving with the San Francisco Clipper Dippers, a Bay area diving club, when he drowned. The companion to whom he gave his air supply, Nelson Chen, 26, also of San Francisco, surfaced successfully. Other divers from the club retrieved Pudoff's body after he failed to emerge off Catalina's Little Harbor.”
