PUTNAM, George Palmer
PUTNAM, George Palmer (1887-1950), publisher, author and explorer who was married to Amelia Earhart on February 7, 1931 after six marriage proposals to her from him. Putnam was widowed through her disappearance on July 2, 1935.
While the world was searching for Amelia Earhart, George Putnam was on San Miguel Island with his next wife to be, the still-married Jean-Marie Cosigny James of Beverly Hills. The two of them flew to the island with George Hammond, and Hammond's plane allegedly developed overnight trouble, thus all three had to spend the night with the Lester family at the ranch on San Miguel Island.
Putnam had Earhart declared dead on January 5, 1939, and he remarried on May 21 of that year to Jean-Marie Cosigny James. They divorced in 1945, and Putnam married Margaret Havilland, his fourth wife.
